Kaizei is a continent under construction that has some basic ideas. To make Kaizei grow, we can use some of what several users have done that is geared around the snowland area. Though Kaizei has some basic story, it can be shaped to be more fitting for what comes from this project and those contributors that want to get involved in it. Because this project is for TMW, it will ultimately attempt to meet the games standards. However, it is also a good playground for testing and experimenting with as well as sharing simple and complex npcs, vast in number and concentrated.
Project Kaizei, as a supplement rather than an official release, will have its own spot within git that others can use for their own servers. While it conforms to TMW art standards, Project Kaizei is to be released with more flexible and random art standards. All pixelart released for TMW-like games that are GPL can be used for the creation of this continent. Sprite layering and recolors are to be used regularly to increase the number of npcs, monsters, equipment, items and so on. Items that haven't been added to the game, but exist in the graphics forums can be used, as can map tiles that make sense to a map creator.
The idea is to initially make Kaizei a stand alone continent with its own version of quests and balance that a character can run through. However, shops only offer items after performing a quest (or series of quests) to unlock it.
All equipment a character has from Argaes can't be transported to Kaizei and the banks have no common link.
Being able to get better items and equipment, more options and so on, the character has to perform a series of quests to unlock the person that might be selling the item. All equipment is to be slowly unlocked by performing a series of quests to stretch the game out or some other method that makes all equipment a quest item or something built.
This idea will be fleshed out more.
Some Ideas
- Continent is a stand alone, so all equipment needs to be detailed.
- Equipment on Kaizei is not compatible with Argaes equipment.
- Linear and non-linear quests need to be completed to unlock access to certain NPCs, open shops, banks, maps and so on.
- Add a PvP/PvE Zone that acts as a crossroads for a section of the map.
- Add multiple trigger caves with an overworld map (XXX-1), underworld maps (XXX-2, XXX-3, XXX-4) and a boss map (XXX-5) to stretch a quest out through numbers of hostile monsters.
- Use NPCs to connect maps that aren't until a map artist fixes the problem. Maps that fit into the setting can also be accepted as long as an NPC can transport the character back and forth.
- Recoloring and sprite layering will vastly expand Kaizei's potential to be a fun supplement. New equipment to be made with more flexible standards to allow rough quality items into the game until art is drafted to replace it.
Kaizei Politics
Argaes influence in the area comes from Castle Frosthorn and are trade competitors with the Order of Ice, though Nivalis and Cacerzi are more influenced by Castle Frosthorn, while Porthos and Avalon are more friendly to the Sages of Kaizei and Order of Ice, native leading organizations. Both Porthos and Cacerzi hunt fluffies in Fluffy Valley and small battles between hunters in the area are known to strike out between the rival companies in Porthos and Cacerzi.
Porthos
Porthos is the starting village for this concept. It has a number of portals set up by the sages of Kaizei and used by adventurers and merchants from Agraes and Tonori. These portals connect the isolated villages of Kaizei as well as offer quick travel for messengers to Agraes and Tonori. However, like most Astral based magic, the portals aren't perfect. They require regular maintenance on both sides of the portal or they fall into disrepair. Because the magic in them has so greatly weakened, currently they only allow travelers through with no items on them. Due to abuse, the banking system in Kaizei does not allow gold or items to transfer from non-Kaizei areas. However, throughout Kaizei, the banking system operates efficiently, though they need its customers to prove they are trustworthy in order to use their services.
Money itself is used less than hunted goods for exchange purposes. "Shops" tend to need the raw materials to make items, in addition to cash. Besides the gold bank and the item bank, there is a resources exchange where raw materials are bought and sold. Porthos is also home of a prominent fur merchant and cloth tailor. Porthos has one cave leading to Fluffy valley, where most of the fur hunters are stationed. The fur merchant and his company needs help in delivering messages, transporting furs and hunting fluffies for furs.
Beyond Fluffy Valley are the towns of Avalon (working name by Arikel), Nivalis, Cacerzi and Castle Frosthorn. To get to each location, a series of caves and outposts must be traveled through. Once a player arrives in the spot, they can fulfill a quest for the local sage to open their access to the Portals of Porthos to get around.
NPCs and Quests
Porthos is a starting area for Kaizei and has different low level quests for characters new to Kaizei, which sometimes overlap with Argaes/Tonori based quests. Here is a list of NPCs and their quests that might be added to Kaizei:
- Guessing game to win emocon use + XP.
- Help Porthos mayor find book to gain trading access + XP.
- Help captain of the guard organize his guards to gain create party access + XP.
- Register for monster points and gain a sharp knife. Monster points are used (along with raw materials) to buy enhancements on equipment, as well as some spells.
- Help Fur Merchant deliver message to Fur Hunters in Fluffy Valley, gain access to Tailor.
- Trade furs for cloth and pay Tailor for labor in exchange for cotton equipment: boots, gloves, shirt, shorts
- Help Fur Hunters collect fur, gain bow + 100 arrows first time (5 furs) then 1000 arrows (10 furs).
- Serf hat quest
- Dagger quest
- Transfer "Rules" NPCs (graduation cap quest) to Kaizei
Map Proposals
For starters, much of the work dealing with Nivalis and Avalon has already been created. The an area to work on is Porthos-1, Porthos-2, Porthos-3, Porthos-4, Porthos-5 and Fluffy Valley-1. Besides Porthos, the caves of Fluffy Valley also lead to Cacerzi, Castle Frosthorn and Avalon/Nivalis, uniting the area. In between Fluffy Valley for Avalon/Nivalis and Castle Frosthorn, separate map with an "outpost" map, with a limited number of quests stretching from it. This would allow more caves to be added as a dividing line in between these higher level areas.
From Avalon/Nivalis area, a cave leading to the fire crystals can be made. The cave maps for XXX-3 and XXX-4 are narrow, but not too narrow that you lose sight of your character. They are ice caves for the most part, though regular caves can be accepted if they are logistically superior for an enjoyable hack and slash to get around the world. Other maps that are needed are the maps dealing with the fire crystals. For the fire crystal area, there will be Fire Lizards and Ice Lizards throughout the map, a level 80+ or 90+ threat. XXX-1, XXX-2 and XXX-5 needs to be unique, but XXX-3 and XXX-4 maps can be made generic (though don't have to be), with the monster swarms and a small number of NPCs to define the character of the map more than unique shape. XXX-1 and XXX-2 are for towns and buildings on the overworld map. XXX-3 and XXX-4 are caves and XXX-5 is a unique cave map or boss map.
Where to next?
- After Porthos and Fluffy Valley, the characters will receive suggestions to go through a cave which will open a travelway to an outpost or town which offers quests for: Scythe, short bow, desert shirt, leather shield
- After this quest point, Nivalis could come around and offer quests for: fur boots/winter gloves, iron arrows, level 1 magic (manaseed + most basic magic offered in Argaes and Tonori), wooden shield.
- Cacerzi could offer quests for: jean shorts, forest bow, short sword, chain mail, winged helmet
- Avalon could offer quests for: level 2 magic, silk robe, wizard staff, frost knife
- Castle Frosthorn could offer quests for: light plate, iron shield, bone knife, crusader helmet
Project Development
This is an outline of what is suggested to be done. The project is open to more ideas on how to develop this area.
